He was born in Barcelona in a family of musicians. He studied flute with his father and studied music at the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona where he obtained the upper degrees in flute, composition and orchestra direction. In 1985 he won a Fullbright scholarship and went to the USA where he obtained a doctorate in music from Florida State University
Salvador Brotons has been the titular director of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Balearic Islands “Ciutat de Palma” (1997-2001, 2009-2013) and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallés (1997-2002). Also in the US, he has been the titular director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (Washington state) since 1991 and has received the “Arts Council” award from Clark County and the city of Vancouver and the Kiwanis Rose Award ( 2005). At the moment he is also the titular director of the Municipal Band of Barcelona.
He has directed important international orchestras in countries such as USA, Israel, France, Germany, China, Poland, South Korea, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia … and the most prestigious orchestras in Spain.

As a composer he has written more than 140 mostly orchestral and chamber works, and has won important composition awards, among them the “National Orchestra of Spain Award” (1977), for his Four Pieces for Strings, the “Jove d ‘ Or “(1980), the” Ciutat Barcelona Award “(1983 for his First Symphony, and 1986 for Absències for narrator and orchestra),” Southeastern

Many of his works have been edited and recorded on several CDs both in Europe and the United States by record companies such as Naxos, EMI, Auvidis, Naxos, Albany Records, Claves, Harmonia Mundi, RNE, etc.
At the moment it compagina an intense agenda like conductor of the orchestra with the composition of a good number of orders of works of diverse sorts. Since 2001 he has been professor of Composition and Conduct of the Orchestra of the Catalan School of Music (ESMUC).
